干强、湿强与表面强度

如上所述,原纸强度不仅必须适于通过涂布机,同时还能通过后期的整饰或其它加工的操作。此外近代涂布设备的车速愈快、门幅愈宽,需要的原纸强度愈高。在水性涂布领域内,当原纸湿润时必须剩余足够的湿强度使纸幅不致在涂布中被撕裂。另外涂布成品在高速印刷下涂布面要被局部撕裂或起泡,这就说明原纸的表面强度太弱,故原纸表面强度要提高,如在不少场合就要求原纸在表面施胶中提高表面强度到蜡棒(Dennison Wax)9~12级(根据原纸种类、纤维配比及后加工等工艺不同而变)。如果原纸需要表面施胶而没有施胶时,最易发生的不仅是上述涂布后期加工及印刷时的局部剥落现象,而且有时不免有原纸表面点状分布的“纤维竖立”(Fibrelift)现象,这种原纸的涂布可能产生以下的问题:

(1)当原纸进入低粘、低固含量涂布时,涂料有牵拉每根“竖纤”形成纸页干燥后局部形成“疱疹”(Pimple)的趋势。

(2)在刮刀、刮棒、计量棒涂布时,纤维被刮离引入涂料后污染了涂布产品,产生涂层“条痕”(Blade & Bar Lines)。
